When the air gets colder, our skin tends to be under even more attack than usual. Dry wind, frigid temperatures, and constant heat changes can all contribute to the damage being done to your skin. That’s why it’s so important to adjust your skin care routine during the colder months to compensate for the change. Today we’ll be talking about why it’s so important to protect your skin, and some of the best ways to do it. Keep reading to check it out!

The Importance of Protecting Your Skin

As we mentioned before, colder temperatures can make things hard for your skin. The first reason is that it can be very drying. Wind blowing, consistent temperature changes, and heavy clothes can all contribute to dryer skin. Not only does this decrease the elasticity of our complexion, it can even lead to worse conditions such as eczema, cracking, bleeding, and acne. When your skin is dry and peeling, it can clog your pores and cause those pesky pimples to show up.

Another threat that is often forgotten about during the fall and winter, is that the sun’s harmful rays are still beating down on your skin. This can cause sunburns, brown spots, sun blemishes, skin cancer, and more. Because it’s so cold, most people don’t think to slather on the SPF.

When it comes to protecting your skin, it’s much more than just for superficial desires. Not protecting your skin can lead to some more serious conditions, some of which we’ve described above. Taking care of your skin goes far beyond preventing wrinkles and getting rid of acne—sometimes it can be the difference between a healthy, well-balanced life, and one full of itching, pain, and life-long conditions.

How to Protect Your Skin

We’ve discussed how important it is to protect your skin, but now we need to know how to do it. If you don’t already have a regular skin care routine in place, we highly recommend starting one! We suggest first doing research based on your skin type. After all, oily skin products won’t do any good for people who have dry skin. In fact, using the wrong kind of products can cause excess oil or acne!

If you aren’t sure what skin type you have, here’s a simple test. Wash your face, then don’t add anything on after. Once an hour has passed, check your skin. If it feels tight and dry, you have dry skin. If it feels super greasy, you have oily skin. If it doesn’t feel any different than usual, you have a normal skin type. Once you’ve figured that out, you can find products that will work best for you.

While you should find specific products for your skin type, there are a few staples that everyone will need, the first of those being sunscreen. As we mentioned before, UV rays are present even during the winter. That means that it’s important to use SPF to protect your skin. Keep some sunscreen handy to apply every day onto any skin that will be exposed. If you’d like, you can find a specific kind for your face. Some moisturizers even already have SPF in them. No matter what kind you use, as long as you’re taking the proper measures to protect your skin from the sun, you’ll be good to go.

Because of the often drying conditions colder temperatures can bring, it’s important to make sure that you’re regularly moisturizing your skin. When you apply lotion or moisturizer to your skin right after leaving the shower, it will help your skin retain the moisture and water it got while you were in there. Remember, even if your skin is oily, you need a moisturizer. Just make sure to get the right kind.

To combat the drying effects of the cold, outside air, and warm, indoor air, try using a humidifier! It will put moisture back into your space. This will not only be good for your skin, but your lungs and nasal system, too!

When you have to brave the outdoors, it’s important to suit up for the occasion. Try to wear things that will protect your skin and keep it as warm as possible. If you have any extra, big scarfs lying around, these would be perfect to wrap around the lower half of your face. If you like wearing beanies, pull it down over your forehead to make sure you’re extra cozy. And, if you end up throwing snowballs, make sure to not stay in wet clothes for too long. This could cause chafing, dry skin, rashes, or more. If you’re planning on doing some outdoor activities, it’s always smart to have some warm, dry clothes to change into.

At the end of the day, no matter how much moisturizer you apply, you will end up with dead skin on your face. The best way to combat this is to exfoliate. This can be done by using a store-bought exfoliant, or by making your own. Here’s a simple recipe using our CBD products to help slough the dead skin off your face, while providing a nice scent and CBD benefits.

In a small bowl, add in half a dropper of Citrus CBD Oil, and a tablespoon of white granulated sugar, or brown granulated sugar. Mix, then apply to your skin. Gently massage onto your face, avoiding your lips. Don’t scrub too hard—the sugar should be doing all the work. After thirty seconds, rinse off with warm water and wash your face. Then apply your favorite moisturizer.

Last but not least, hydrated skin starts from the inside out. So, it’s important to make sure that you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the winter. Bonus points if you infuse your water with different kinds of fruits and vegetables. You’ll get the benefits of water, while also getting some extra nutrients and minerals from the added produce!
